A jury awarded $800,000 to a man who claimed he suffered jaw and shoulder injuries when he was thrown from his bicycle.

Antonio Miguelez, then 33, was riding his Klein Revo Road bicycle up the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami when he alleged the front forks snapped abruptly, causing him to be thrown to the ground. Miguelez was diagnosed with bilateral TMJ disorders and right shoulder impingement with rotator cuff tendinopathy. The plaintiff’s composite materials expert testified the bike’s front carbon fiber fork blades were manufactured with excessive voids in the carbon that caused the forks to weaken and snap.

The defense’s metallurgy expert testified the carbon forks were made properly and the voids were acceptable.
